Last week, I shared something that surprised even me.

I ran over three miles without stopping.

Now, for some of you, that might not sound like much. But for me, it was a pretty big accomplishment. Just a few weeks earlier, I was thrilled to make it half a mile!

Here’s what I’ve been thinking about since that run.

The three miles weren’t really the biggest accomplishment. It was all the little steps that got me there.

Big Changes Start Small

I didn’t wake up one morning and suddenly become a runner.

I started moving more. I began walking with a weighted backpack, something called rucking. I challenged myself to run half a mile. And then I kept showing up.

Some days were easier than others. Some days I probably would have preferred to stay home.

But each little effort built on the one before it.

And somewhere along the way, something changed.

Not because of one incredible workout, but because I consistently made the decision to keep moving.

What Does This Have to Do With Your Spine?

Quite a bit!

Think about the things we do every single day.

We sit at desks. We look down at phones. We drive to work. We spend hours in positions that don’t allow much movement.

Over time, inactivity, repetitive strain, and insufficient muscle conditioning can contribute to stiffness, discomfort, and reduced mobility.

But here’s the encouraging part.

Just as small habits can contribute to physical problems, small healthy habits can help improve how we feel and function.

You don’t have to run a marathon. You don’t need an expensive gym membership. And you certainly don’t have to start rucking with a heavy backpack!

Sometimes, improving your physical health starts with something as simple as taking a walk.

Chiropractic care may help address certain types of back and neck pain, but what you do between visits matters, too. Regular movement, appropriate exercise, and healthy daily habits can all play important roles in maintaining mobility and physical function.

Five Small Changes You Can Make This Week

1. Take a 10-minute walk.

Walking is a simple way to increase physical activity. Start with a distance and pace that feel comfortable for you.

2. Get up and move throughout the day.

If you work at a desk, take regular movement breaks. Even a short walk around the office can interrupt long periods of sitting.

3. Strengthen your body.

You don’t need to lift heavy weights. Simple resistance exercises appropriate for your abilities can help improve strength and support everyday activities.

4. Give your body some variety.

Instead of worrying about maintaining perfect posture all day, focus on changing positions regularly. Your body is designed to move!

5. Be consistent, not perfect.

This might be the most important one.

You don’t need to do everything perfectly. Missing a day doesn’t erase your progress. What matters is building habits you can return to and maintain.

My Seven-Day Challenge to You

Here’s what I want you to do this week.

Pick ONE healthy habit.

Just one.

Maybe it’s walking for ten minutes after dinner. Maybe it’s standing up and moving every hour at work. Maybe it’s finally starting those strengthening exercises you’ve been putting off.

Whatever you choose, make it realistic.

Then commit to practicing it for the next seven days.

Because lasting improvement usually isn’t about one dramatic decision. It’s about the little choices we make over and over again.

And if pain or stiffness is making it difficult to get moving, that’s something we’d love to help you address.

Take the Next Step

At Atkinson Family Chiropractic, we want to help you move better, feel better, and continue doing the things you love.

Your health journey doesn’t have to look like mine. Your three-mile run might be walking around the block, playing with your grandchildren, or getting through your workday more comfortably.

Whatever your goal, remember this:

You don’t have to change your whole life in one day. You just have to take the next step.

Here’s to small steps and big changes!
